A Tour of Europe

A WebQuest for the Students of Ms. Robinson

 at Tates Creek Middle School

Introduction

In this project you will use the Internet as a resource to locate information on a particular country in Europe. Learning how to appropriately use the Internet as a research tool and to present your research to the class is an important part of your learning goals. By combining this with your study of Europe, you will truly benefit and improve your learning.

Task

Each student is to select a country in Europe and use the Internet sites listed in the resources below to gather useful information about their country. The worksheet that accompanies this project will guide you through this process to make your task easier.

Resources

Factbook of Most Nations - the factbook is one of the best source to find the basic information about your country

Encarta and Britannica Encyclopedias - this link will take you to the Fayette County Intranet page. You will find the links to these encyclopedia in the upper right corner of the page

Kidport to Nations of the World - another good source of basic facts

Statistics of United Nations Countries - tell the computer what information you are looking for and it will locate the facts - basic information, but fun to use!

Worldwide Holiday & Festival Site - need a little culture? go here!

A Great Site to Find Flags - yes, it's a great place to find flags

A list of countries - this site leads you to many more sites that relate to your country - not all of them are guaranteed to be reliable, so use good judgment

Good culture sites for some European Countries - go here if you are looking for cultural information on France, Italy, Great Britain, Germany or Greece

A search page for photos of European Countries

Pictures of some European Countries

Process

Look over your worksheet so that you are familiar with all the information you need to locate. Remember: the resources will not give information in the same order as your worksheet.

Click on the resources listed above starting at the top and working your way down. Collect as much information as you can. Take note of interesting facts even if it is not on the worksheet.

Be sure to get a copy of your country's flag and color it right away. Try to find an explanation or meaning of the flag's colors or symbols

Teacher Tips

When you get into a site you will often have to go further in to get your information. Always use the Back arrow in the upper left corner to back out of the site and get back to the WebQuest.

Evaluation

This project will count as a major test grade. You will be graded on your effort, your serious approach to this project, the notes you collect and your final report.

Conclusion

As learners we must take advantage of many different resources. Not everything on the Internet is reliable - just as not everything you read in the newspaper is true. You must learn to use your own judgment, compare several different sources to see if they are reporting the same information and consider the reputation of the source.
