Introduction

Welcome to the Restless Earth. Our world is constantly changing. Even the ground beneath you is slowly moving and earthquakes have been detected not far from here. Why do people joke about California falling into the ocean? What do you know about Mt. St. Helens? How were the Hawaiian Islands formed? Were South America and Africa once connected? Indeed, it is a restless Earth on which we live! Now it is time for you to take a quest down into the depths of the earth to discover what makes the ground beneath you so restless.

Your task is to visit the sites listed below in the Resources and to gather  information about volcanoes and earthquakes.

As you read through your resources answer the questions on the worksheet.

Teacher Tips

#1: When you visit Life Along the Faultline , click on the section "Why the Earth Shakes: Seismic Science" and do pages 1 - 5. 

#2: When you visit The Savage Earth! you will need to visit "Out of the Inferno: Volcanoes" and "Waves of Destruction: Tsunamis"

You must locate all the information on the worksheet to receive full credit for this assignment.

Conclusion

It is important for students to understand the world around them and we spend a lot of time analyzing and studying what we see around us everyday.
