Introduction

Welcome to the world of Volcanoes. Our world is constantly changing. Even the ground beneath you is slowly moving and because of this movement,  volcanoes are erupting at this very moment somewhere in the world.  What do you know about Mt. St. Helens? How were the Hawaiian Islands formed? What is the difference between a composite volcano and a shield volcano? Is it possible for a volcano in another part of the world to affect your life? Now it is time for you to take a quest down into the depths of the earth to discover what causes these massive and dangerous explosions!

Task

Your task is to visit the sites listed below in the Resources and to gather  information about volcanoes and their features.

Process

Step 1: Visit Our Most Recent Volcanic Eruption. Sketch a timeline of this volcano's history as described on the worksheet.

Step 2: Read the information in Volcano! Answer the questions on your worksheet.

Step 3: Go to The Volcano Crossword Puzzle! Select Volcanoes from the list. Using key words from the clues, complete the crossword puzzle.

Step 4: Go to the Source of Current Volcanoes. Write a brief account of what happened at Mt. St. Helens. Pick any other volcanic eruption and write another brief account of what happened at that volcano.

Step 5: Go to Check out Mt. Fuji. It will help if you know it is in Japan. Use the information from this site to answer the questions on your worksheet.

Teacher Tips

Plan your time wisely so that you can complete all five steps. Help each other out, but make sure everyone in the group is involved. EVERYONE MUST TAKE A TURN AT WORKING ON THE COMPUTER!! 

Evaluation

You must locate all the information on the worksheet to receive full credit for this assignment. In addition, your ability to work together and stay on task is a large part of your grade.

Conclusion

It is important for students to understand the world around them and we spend a lot of time analyzing and studying what we see around us everyday.
