A Unit of Study of Biomes

for the Students in Ms. Jacob's Science Classes

 at Morton Middle School

Organizer

What do I need to understand about biomes that will help me to better understand my role in the biosphere, how I can improve or harm the environment of a particular biome, and how I can see how the biome in which I live is interconnected to all the other biomes.

Standards

1.1 Students use reference tools such as computer reference programs to find the information they need to meet specific demands or solve specific problems

1.2 Students make sense of the variety of materials they read.

1.16 Students use computers and other kinds of technology to collect and organize information and ideas.

2.3 Students identify and describe systems, subsystems and components and their interactions by completing tasks and/or creating products.

2.4 Students use models and scale to explain or predict the organization, function, and behavior of objects, materials, and living things in their environment.

Essential Questions

1. What are characteristics of the major biomes?

2. What are examples of organisms are common to each of the major biomes?

3. How do the organisms in the biomes interact?

4. What kind of adaptations have the organisms in the major biomes developed?

Culminating Activity

The final project for this unit of study will be a brochure of a particular biome. The brochure will include important representative organisms of the biome, adaptations these organisms have made to survive in this biome, food chains and food webs, interactions with other biomes, and an explanation of your role in this biome. The brochure will be submitted as a Portfolio Piece.
