Great
Ideas from
Around the Schools
The third
graders at Yates are true keyboarding champions. The
students are introduced to keyboarding in 2nd grade, retaught
Success With Keyboarding in 3rd Grade, and practice Ultra Keys for
a few minutes regularly in the lab. Cathy Meccariello
(Computer Lab and co STLP coordinator) has been clocking 3rd graders typing 30, 40, and 50 plus words per
minute, often with 100 percent accuracy. Don't you know how
much easier it will be to write 4th grade portfolios next year!
Barbara Spielberg's
students (K-Lansdowne) will soon be published authors
and illustrators on the web. They are creating a talking alphabet
book.
Rita Dobson
(STC-Harrison) has made a word wall in the
Computer Lab consisting of technology terms.

FREE, Yes FREE Sets of Books for K-1 Classes!
(If you are not a K-1 teacher, you may want to pass this along
to someone who is!)
You are probably familiar with LEF (Literacy
Empowerment Foundation - http://www.colorcodedbooks.org/lef/index.htm).
It is through this organization that Bruce Larkin is offering
his sets of 25 books at no charge, except $12 for postage and
handling. I received this information in an e-mail from LEF:
"BRUCE LARKIN, AUTHOR OF MORE THAN 200
CHILDREN'S BOOKS, INCLUDING THE POPULAR 'LARKIN'S LITTLE READERS', HAS
DONATED HIS BOOKS FREE TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST
GRADE CHILDREN TO ASSIST EDUCATORS IN PROMOTING A LOVE OF READING."
