Some Great Project Ideas

Technology is just a tool!  It's just another way to teach what you are already teaching!  Good technology integration begins with small steps (like make a goal to just use technology in the classroom - not just the lab - one day a week), and grows into everyday use.

Kim Johnson's (Yates) first graders are writing and illustrating their own legends.  Their stories are first handwritten on paper, then keyboarded into Word.  The children are using MS Paint to illustrate the story.  The students will record their voices reading the legends, and the final product will be placed in web pages so these new legends can be shared with the world.

Ruby Owiny's (Harrison) 2/3 class researched and wrote about animals.  The stories were written in Word and illustrated in Paint.  Last week the stories premiered for parents at an Author's Tea.

All of Lansdowne's 5th graders are learning how to use personal e-mail accounts.  While they are learning how to use e-mail in the lab, so many things can be done with e-mail activities in the classroom.  If I can help you with any teaching ideas using e-mail, just give a yell!

(Also known as Dear Abby.Net)

ALL GRADES:  E-mail is one of the best ways to contact our troops.  After the Anthrax scare a while back, snail mail to the troops has been discouraged. This site actually does all the work. Students do not need to have an email account, but must provide an e-mail address.  In the classroom, this could be done as a group or classroom activity, or as a center or station activity.  You will need to provide the name of an email account, and many teachers just use their school account.  I strongly recommend that a teacher or assistant read email before they are sent.  A BIG thanks to Susan Moore and Sheila Cope (Lansdowne) for sharing this site!

TEACHERS: An extensive list of links to on-line resources for teachers.  The resources include news feeds that would be appropriate for children... and LOTS more!

I also have copies of some excellent resources that Jane Gettler (Principal at Lansdowne) shared with her staff.  If you would like copies, let me know.  I can forward Jane's e-mail to you!
