Celebrating the Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"What I miss most," declared Cathy Meccariello of the Yates Computer Lab, "is all the neat things we used to be able to do in the Lab for Martin Luther King Day."  Yes, with SRI and Star Math, it is difficult, if not impossible, to enjoy those internet activities in the lab.  However, there are lots of ways you can use the Internet to study Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in your classroom:

View the Internet sites with your whole class using your school's computer on wheels (COW) with a projector, or your AverKeys.

Listen to King's famous speeches on a computer that has speakers.

Do you read picture books to your whole class at once?  Most computer screens are larger than a picture book.  Select sites with pictures for the entire class to see as you read to them.

Set up a computer station for centers or computer rotations. Use desktop short cuts or web page links to keep students on the correct sites.

Have small groups of students view the web pages on one computer.

Print the web pages to use for classroom discussions.  It is more economical to photocopy papers than to print them.  So print one copy to photocopy.

Use Kidspiration or Inspiration to make a web about the life of Dr. King.

Use the TimeLiner program to make a time line about Dr, King.

Have your students use the AlphaSmarts to write an Open Response on Dr. King.

Cathy says she really misses the excitement the students showed as they explored Martin Luther King in the Computer Lab.  Cathy added that the students would comment on their Internet experience indicating that  "...they felt like Martin Luther Kings was right here with us."

As always, if I can help you with any of these activities, please just let me know!

Elementary:  Here's a good website dealing with Internet safety. It's geared toward elementary students, but the content is appropriate for any age, and could be adapted for middle school. There's a 7 1/2 minute video on the site. Our department has a VHS version of the same video. If you want to borrow it, let me know.  Thanks to Greg Drake for this site!

100th DAY OF SCHOOL
