This page has been designed to help you with problems that have arisen with this program and the solutions that have been found to work. If you have any problem/solution that does not appear in this list, please email it to me and I will add it. Remember, if you do not feel comfortable trying some of these solutions, please email me or the Help Desk and the message will be given to the appropriate person. Things you need to keep in mind: Maintenance needs to be run weekly. During the summer, the technicians at SRI said it could be done once a month. When you get your database ready for the first testing, make a backup and save it. Do this also when you complete each testing window. This is necessary should the database become corrupt during the testing cycle, or if the data needs to be restored. You would have a clean and current backup. Remember to disable TREND. Be sure that the date and time are the same on your machine as in SRI. You use the EASY START to set you date, time, school year and testing windows. Your technician can set the time/date on the server. The following are problems we have encountered and the solutions. If you do not feel comfortable trying some of these, please call or email me and I will work with you. Your District LAN Technician can also assist. For SRI, READING COUNTS, READ 180 or Wiggleworks (especially if you are using any Win95 machines on a WINNT server): If you receive any of these errors, follow the outlined steps. Out of Memory Error, Runtime Error, Abnormal Program Termination, Database Busy, Fatal Exception OE Errors, Database 1-Unknown Error 1. Determine the version of Windows you are running. Go your workstations, FIND or SEARCH, FILES or FOLDERS, and type in the search box VREDIR.VXD. If the version number is not 4.00.1116 (dated 9/11/97) or higher, then the version you have is causing computers to return error codes to the user. To correct the version problem, you need to go to EACH Workstation, download the Vredir.vxd patch to the desktop of the affected machines (those having a version lower than 4.00.1116) Double click on the icon and follow the instructions. Once this is done, reboot the machine and the server. You can also download the patch to a floppy and run it on the affected machines. Click here for the patch . 1.
Backup data. Have a hard copy of test date and scores available. Locate most
current backup run before the problem existed. 2. Disable TREND. Run maintenance, external ( Icon on your desktop) and internal ( inside the SRI folder usually found in the PROGRAMS, Scholastic, Management Suite . Run two times. 3.
If backup or maintenance fails, then find your most current backup, Go
to TOOLS on the SMS menu bar, UTILITIES, SRI and RESTORE. It will ask if
you want it to restore, yes. 4.
Disable TREND. Run maintenance again and see if the problem has been corrected. 5.
If problem is not corrected, go to server, uninstall program totally. 6. Reinstall program. Go through steps to set date, time, data path, test periods. If you don't have a clean backup, go to EASY START, pass screens until you get to IMPORT, IMPORT A SCHOOL DATABASE, use the import Kim Hooks sent to you. Refer to hard copy to enter the data into your program Highlight name of each student for which you need to add data, click EDIT on the lower right of the screen, go to ENROLL IN on the right side of the screen 7. Enable TREND. 8.
Go to a workstation, install READING COUNTS and QUIZZES. Set data path. Student tested, but score does not appear. For some unknown reason, an occasional student's score does not appear in the student screen, but does appear in the Reports. The easiest thing to do is to double click on the student's name, go to the right side of the screen where you enroll the student in SRI. Click on SRI, STUDENT TEST RESULTS, ADD a test (a print test is ok) scroll to the date the student tested and add the lexile. Save. Can't print reports. The reports inside the SMS_DATA folder has become corrupt. 1. Go to a workstation, not the server. 2. Install the SRI program on this workstation. If you have it installed, uninstall it and use the installation CD to do a clean install. Be sure you have the correct version of SRI (if you are running 1.3 have the 1.3 CD). 3. Once the install is completed, go to Network Neighborhood. Go to the server with the ASSESS folder (usually your school name and either _NT or _APPS). Open it, find SCHLASTC, copy the REPORTS folder to the desktop and then delete it from the list. 4. Open the SCHLASTC folder on the workstation. Inside are three folders, on named REPORTS. Right click on the REPORTS folder and copy it to the ASSESS\SCHLASTC folder. 5. Open the SRI Management suite and your reports should run correctly. Can't generate new reading list from RC/SRI. Run upgrade patch. Be sure all SRI stations are logged out. In order for the new list to work, this has to be done before the first round of testing. To generate a new reading list for all students, go to EDIT, SELECT ALL. Select REPORTS button, Choose SRI, STUDENT READING LIST, CUSTOMIZE, GENERATE NEW READING LIST. Last year's students appear in the Teacher's student roster after the old classes have been deleted. This happens frequently when you do management on a machine that is not the same as the ones which staff use to access the SMS. The teacher who has classroom privileges can select to unassign students by: Clicking the student tab and selecting the students to unassign. Next, click delete which will only unassign the student but not delete the student records. The administrator can filter by teacher and unenroll the students from that teachers classes. If the administrator does this on a 2000 machine and the teachers are using WIN95, the list does not transfer. It is best for the teacher to unassign the student from the teacher workstation. SRIw32.exe page fault 1. Lower the graphics acceleration. Want to run Maintenance, but Says User is logged into SRI, but I know everyone is logged out. 1. Reboot server. 2. Log back into SRI , disable TREND and run Maintenance. 3. Enable TREND when finished. No sound from READ 180 CD. 1. Have the Network Administrator check to see if the proper rights to have been given. 2. Check the version of Quick Time you are running. If it is a 2000 machine, you need to be running Quick Time 6.0. WIN 95 will take Quick Time 3 or 4. It will tell you which it prefers. 3. Check the data path. If it can't find the correct path, the program will not play sound or allow you to put in a name. Won't accept student to test. 1. Check to see if there are multiple copies of the SMS folder. You need to point the database to the right SMS folder. Things ran fine in the Spring, but I can't do maintenance or backup for Fall testing. In the Educator's Addendum 2.0, it states that maintenance must be done weekly. This was not made clear when we first started testing. The files for READ 180 and RC, all use the SMS maintenance. If the backup and maintenance are not done on a regular basis, the files become corrupt and even though you may not have READ 180, it looks for those files while completing its checklist. If not found, then it won't complete the maintenance and gives you the error. Schedule over the summer to do the maintenance so the program stays in good working order. Remember to disable TREND before running the maintenance and to enable TREND when maintenance is completed. I did the promotion and now I have grades 13, 14, and 15. You have a corrupt data base. Locate you last backup before this happened and restore from the clean backup. 1. Be sure before running the SMS, to disable TREND. 2. .Go to TOOLS, RESTORE, and tell it where the backup is located. 3. Tell it ok and it will complete the restore. 4. If you have tested since the last backup, be sure you have a hard copy of the scores and reenter them by highlighting the students needing scores added, click EDIT on the lower right of the screen. 5. Go to ENROLLED IN, select SRI, STUDENT TEST RESULTS, ADD, Put in date, Lexile and OK. 6. Enable TREND when finished. Data Base empty error 1. SRI says they do not know why this happens, but the solution is to go into the SCHLASTC folder. (This is the misspelled folder on the server.) 2. Find the DATABASE AND DBSTAT folders. 3. Right click and copy the DBSTAT and paste it into the DATABASE folder. 4. Save and exit. Open the management suite and you should see your data. How do I disable TREND? 1. Your STC has a password which the STC will need to enter to disable TREND. 2. In WIN 2000, right click on the icon in the systems tray (lower right hand of desktop) and choose UNLOAD from the popup list. 3. STC enters password. 4. When finished, right click on the icon in the systems tray and reload. 5. On WIN 95, START, PROGRAMS, TREND OFFICE SCAN, Select OFFICE Scan 95. 6. Use those same steps to enable on WIN95. 7. Be sure to enable TREND. Failure to do so leaves you with no virus protection. Can't take quizzes in Reading Counts Check the data base path. Reset path and restart program. Skipping CD's without teacher programming or students' cannot move beyond one zone or it skips from one CD to another. 1. A new patch has been run on the server and on each workstation running READ 180. If it keeps occurring, re run the patch which is called SMS 2.0.3. This updates files in SRI and READ 180. If you have them on separate data bases then you will have to run the patch on the server where each resides and on all workstations. 2. To insure the patch is actually installed, check the dates of the following files: Srifbk.cdx and srifbk.dbf - Located in the Database folder within the SMS_Data folder on your network server. These files should have a modified date of 4/3/2002. Sriw32.exe is found in the Scholastic\SRI folder usually found in the Program Files folder (for Windows) . This file should have the date of 4/7/2002. Scholasticmanagementsuite.exe found in the Scholastic\Scholastic Management Suite folder usually found in the Program Files folder (for Windows) . This file should have the date of 10/28/2002 or later. If you still have a problem, highlight the students with whose accounts you are having problems, go to FILE, EXPORT, choose the first one that deals with the SMS data not the .csv or .txt. After the export and you know that the files has successfully exported, deleted these students. Go to File, IMPORT, and import these students. Set the CD they need to be using. They will have to start at the beginning of the CD. If the above works, great, if not, put the students in with auxilary ID's and use that account. Their data is too corrupt to use. 3. Do a backup and then Maintenance. Date the backup 20030429_R180 or SRI or whatever the program you are using is named. Keep at least two weeks of backups in case the corruption occurred before you realized and the last few might have problems. If you would like to talk with a representative from SRI, go to WEB CHAT. You can get on line with a technician and have a record of your conversation. I ask about all programs even though the web chat link appears only on the READ 180 site.
