Star Math Troubleshooting and Tips

This page has been designed to help you with problems that have arisen with this program and the solutions that have been found to work. If you have any problem/solution that does not appear in this list, please email it to me and I will add it.  Remember, if you do not feel comfortable trying some of these solutions, please email me, or the Help Desk and the message will be given to the appropriate person.

Error Codes 69, 16034, 16040 Runtime error, Database is busy, Lockups and Display Problems black screen or cannot save tests on NT, 2000 or 95/98

These error messages can indicate a corrupt data index file usually caused by a corrupt VREDIR.VXD.

 1. Determine the version of Windows you are running.  Go your workstations, FIND or SEARCH, FILES or FOLDERS, and type in the search box VREDIR.VXD. If the version number is not 4.00.1116 (dated 9/11/97) or higher, then the version you have is causing computers to return error codes to the user.  To correct the version problem, you need to go to EACH Workstation, download the Vredir.vxd patch to the desktop of the affected machines (those having a version lower than 4.00.1116) Double click on the icon and follow the instructions. Once this is done, reboot the machine and the server. You can also download the patch to a floppy and run it on the affected machines. Click here for the patch . If you are running STARMATH on a Windows NT or 2000 network, you also need to run the OP LOCK patch on the server and restart the server. The RFCB Caching should be set to zero. For information on the RFCB click here.

The rest of the files are files created specifically by each application. For example, Accelerated Reader creates a file called ACCREADR.INI. You will need to set permissions for the files in bold, the folder in bold, and any additional files listed that you have. The permissions must be set individually.

  Can't run Data Doctor

If you are trying to run Data Doctor on a 2000 machine and are having problems, go to a 95 machine and see if you can run Data Doctor from it. Chances are you can and it will work. You should then be able to run Data Doctor from the 2000 machine. If not,

1. Go to Windows SEARCH, FILES AND FOLDERS. Type in alsbigc.* and you will see the listing of alsbigc files. Delete these files..

2. Restart the management program. You will have to reregister and set the data location.

Next, go to the server where STARMATH resides. Find the STARMATH FOLDER, then

1. Go to the INSTALLS folder.

2. Open the STARMATH FOLDER.

3.Open the EXTRAS FOLDER.

If you still can't get the Data Doctor to run, find your install CD. Be sure it is the correct version (we are running 1.2, if you have had the program for a while, you probably have 1.0 and it will not work. Call me if you need the CD.

1. Uninstall STARMATH on a machine. Install from the CD. Point to the correct data base and run Data Doctor.
