Tech Tips - Moving Images in Microsoft Word

When inserting clipart or pictures into a word document, by default the image will be inserted wherever the cursor is currently located.  If you want to move the image around freely without using the spacebar or alignment buttons, follow the directions below after inserting the image in the document.

  • Click on the image to select it.  (There should be small boxes at each corner.)
  • A float picture toolbar will probably appear. If not, right click on the image and choose, Show Picture Toolbar.

  • Then click on the Text Wrapping button. (It looks like a dog with lines behind it.)
  • You can experiment with the different options, but I generally choose Square.

You should now be able to drag and drop your image wherever you want it, even in the middle of text.  Anything you have typed will wrap around the image.  This is especially helpful when creating newsletters, brochures or other types of publications.
