Who were the first to come to America & Why?

After several parts of North America were discovered and explored, different companies began to sponsor colonization expeditions.

1.  Name a company that started such a business.  1606 - The London Company sponsors a colonizing expedition to Virginia.

2.  A second company that provided competition was Plymouth Company, also called Virginia Colony of Plymouth

3.  Noticing the area of America (see map) that each company claimed, what kind of climate is found in this area?

Hint to help you answer this question: think of a city located in this area today and find out the climate of that city today by using Weather Channel or any website of your choice.  Boston is located in the area these companies claim.  The temperature range in an average year is 22 to 82 degrees. Average precipitation for each month averages just under 4 inches.

4.  What did the Virginia Company promise to give to travelers for 7 years of their labor?  in exchange for seven years of labor for the company, the company provided passage, food, protection and land ownership.

5. Briefly, tell why some people in England wanted to come to America?

6.  Concerning religion, what happened to some who tried to practice their religion during the day of King James? During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Puritan-leaning religious opinions were generally tolerated.

7.  Not every piece of information on the Internet is proven.  Compare the information you read for #6 above and this page.  Is it basically the same information or different?  Why?  Different.  This page sounds like people created their own Christian groups and moved to be away from another group.  There is no mention of the government punishing them for what they believed.

8. What country do both articles declare that Pilgrims went to before they decided to come to America? Holland

9.  Check out this page and see if you find any more reasons for the Pilgrims to come to America.

The Separatists decided to leave Holland because they had a hard time finding good jobs and they were afraid their children were losing their English ties.

10.  After reading for and answering the questions above, ultimately, who were the 2 groups of people that were interested in what the London & Plymouth Companies had to offer?  Hint: Read this page carefully, if you haven’t figured it out already.

Those that were poor needing jobs/money/food and those that wanted to practice their religion.
