Learning to Read High Frequency Words-First Grade

Using Word or Excel play the following games as whole class using scan converter, projector or a presentation board.

1.  Word Search-If using excel, let a called on student click and delete the letters of the word being searched.

2. Use a presentation program (Power Point or Hyper Studio) to present a scrambled word.  For immediate feed back the next screen will show the correct word.

3. To use words in context, write a sentence with the high frequency words and have the students point them out.  Let students use the mouse to click and drag to highlight.

4. Use the "Wiggle Works" Magnet Board.

5. Use the Old Orchard Beach Reading / Language Arts Curriculum method by creating the document on an excel and electronically color the cells as they master them.  Easier to keep records and have ready copies for everyone involved.

6. Use Georgetown Linguistics Web Frequency Indexer to county frequency of words.  Type in a sentence and let students predict which word will be use the most.
