Fall Lesson Ideas

Some sites you might be able to use in the lab and classroom computer with your first graders:

 

1.  Pumpkin Story at Starfall.  Children can click on the words.  Vowels are pronounced then the word is pronounced http://www.starfall.com/n/holiday/halloween/play.htm?f

 

2. The Nature of Science:  Experimental Design

Properties of Objects

SC-E-1.1.1 Objects have many observable properties such as size, shape, color, temperature, magnetism, and the ability to react with other substances.

4.  Use www.unitedstreaming.com , esp. in the classroom:  For your first time you will need to use 6CB8-CE3A to enter the site where you will then decide on a username and password you want to use.  FCPS is paying for use for this site this year.  You can use your username/password to access this site and download from any computer…even at home. Movies can be downloaded and used for the current school year…same goes for any movies you burn to a CD.  To download, right click on the D, save target as.

Objectives for each movie for KY are listed for each movie.  For Fall you might want to try the following:

   After viewing this one minute movie, teacher opens a word document (increase font size for viewing), and records the facts from the movie that students recall.  Add a graphic for coloring from http://www.backyardgardener.com/pump1.html (right click on graphic, copy, go back to Word document, paste), provide copies to students.

 

5.  Constancy

AE 2.5 Students understand that under certain conditions nature tends to remain the same or move toward a balance.

Demonstrators

·      Describe an event or system that includes a constant process.

·      Identify, observe, and communicate recurring events.

 

Teacher led activity:  Talk about “Change over Time”  @ http://www.fallinpa.com/fallinpa/index.jsp# click on “Check out the Fall Foliage Feature”  You’ll be able to see pictures taken from a time lasped web cam.  Compare the first and last pictures to see how the leaves are changing.
