New Home & New Position

Last year I was computer lab teacher for Athens Elementary.  That school closed at the end of the school year and moved a bit closer into town to a new building we now call Athens-Chilesburg Elementary.  My position was deleted and I was assigned to teach third grade.

I'm working with an exceptional group of children.  They ALL are eager to soak in any knowledge I provide for them.

And, yes of course I'm integrating technology EVERY day.  Like most teachers who can't teach without their black/white board and/or overhead, I would have a very hard time, and boring time, teaching without computers and all they have to offer.

All of the classrooms at ACE are equipped with a ceiling mounted overhead projector connected to a computer which is located in the back of the classroom.  Yes, that has proved frustrating many times having to run back and forth from the back to the front of the classroom.

The screen is mounted about 2 feet above the white board.  Below you'll see a picture of students presenting their power point presentation to share what they have learned about the lady bug including it's life cycle.  Team members were trying to point to information on the screen while their team mate was at the computer in the back of the room managing the power point.

The computer is connected to an awesome sound system mounted to two speakers in the ceiling.  This makes for a great theatre setting when showing videos such as those from United Streaming.

In our classroom you will also find at this time 6 computers, one with headphones and my computer which students use ocassionally makes 7 available computers.  Soon I hope to have my old computer from last year

Like waiting for the birth of a child, I'm anxiously waiting for the arrival of a wireless pad which will help with the problem of the computer being located in the back of the room.

So, if you are a third grade teacher you might find some tricks, tips and lessons from this newsletter and it's home page you can use in your classroom this year.  If you aren't a third grade teacher, I hope you still find something you can adapt for your class.

Yea Technology and have a great year,

Handwriting Practice

The Handwriting For Kids site offers teaching tools and practice sheets for both manuscript and cursive writing.  There are animations to show how to write each letter.  To be able to use these in class, download each animation (right click, save target as, choose the folder you've made to save them in, save) into a folder along with the handwriting practice documents. (I did some copy and paste to create practice sheets with more lines.) Then during practice time open the animated gif and project on the screen to replay over and over as students are practicing.

Life Cycles

Entertainment is the name of the game with this class.  Students really showed their "stuff" this month when they presented their information about the life cycle of their assigned animal for the web quest.  Check out the power point produced by team 1 made in most part by Hannah!  Awesome job!
