Back to School

      This year I will be working as a Technology Teacher, Technology Resource Teacher, School Technology Coordinator, STLP Coordinator and Webmaster for Athens Elementary in Lexington.  So my newsletter will relate to the things I come across to meet the requirements and needs of those positions.  It is my hope that you find this newsletter to continue to be a resource and useful for you and your class.  I hope everyone has a great year knowing "It's all about KIDS!"

Athens' Computer Lab Activities

each class is 60 minutes, each Rotation includes 4 days (most of the time)

Students can use the Internet after the Technology Policy has been signed.

 Each class will spend 1 whole week in computer class every 3 weeks.

Note:  if you post your lesson plans, your sub and parents will be able to check ahead to see what is expected.

K- Introduction to Computer lab & patterns

POS-SS-P-G-2 Students will visualize where things (e.g., schools, neighborhoods) are located.

SS-E-4.1.2 Directions right and left.  POS-SS-P-GC-1 Students will recognize and understand the need for rules within the home and school setting.

Lesson 1- The Learner will: identify parts of Computer - play Simon Says. Show students using LCD projector how to make circles and squares using the paint program.   Create patterns using circles and rectangles.  Students determine the pattern and make the next figure with help.  Students will attempt to make their own pattern.

Lesson 2-  .  The Learner will: Refine fine motor skills using the mouse in operating the Paint program while learning directional and technical vocabulary. Following 1 and 2 step directions. Allow students to freely explore the Paint program

Lesson 3 TLW: attempt to make a pattern. Show students using the LCD projector how to use Kidworks to create Patterns. 

Lesson 4-  TLW: Refine fine motor skills using Kidworks while demonstrating directional and technical vocabulary.  Allow students to explore the Kidworks program.

Assessment for Lessons 1-4 = Holistic observation…can or can’t  

1st/2nd - Creating Patterns MA-E-4.2.1 Find rules, for, extend, and create patterns

Lesson 1-TLW: Create colored patterns using the circle and rectangle tool in the Paint Program.

Lesson 2- TLW: Create colored patterns using a given grid created in Word. Use this grid to demonstrate patterns, then let students create their own.  (Click in the cell, use the paint bucket on the table tool bar to choose colors.)

Lesson 3-TLW:  Use Inspiration or Kidspiration to create patterns by dragging graphics onto the work area.

Lesson 4- TLW: Using the grid provided in number 3 above, student creates a pattern, students rotate computers to complete pattern started and starts another pattern.

Assessment: TLW will successfully complete tasks assigned.

 

3rd

All About ME

WR-E-1.2 – personal writing.

AE 2.16: Students observe, analyze and interpret human behaviors, social groupings and institutions to better understand people and the relationships among individuals and among groups.

Lesson 1- With help from teacher, students write directions given as teacher demonstrates how to make a 4 slide power point.  The power point includes: Slide 1- title, author; Slide 2- Description of author/s; Slide 3 -Likes; Slide 4 - Dislikes.

Lesson 2- Students use their own written directions either individually for with a team mate to make a power point about themselves. 

Lesson 3- Students use the Paint program to draw a picture of themselves including their likes/dislikes.  Show students how to save as jpeg to later insert into power point.  Insert into power point if time allows.

Lesson 4- Students add to written directions as they are instructed how to add background and develop slide transitions. 

Lesson 5- Share Power Points

Follow up: Students may use information and graphics when writing future personal pieces.

 Community

WR-E-1.2 – personal writing.

SS-E-1.3.1 Rights and responsibilities of citizens in a community are determined by specific roles within various groups.

SS-E-2.3.1 Various human needs are met through interaction in and among social groups (e.g., family, schools, teams, and clubs.)

Lesson 6 =last 4-6 days- Develop a Power Point about Athens Elementary and it's community.  The power point should include information and memories about the school and community's history.  Tell how rights and responsibilities of citizens developed this community and school and how human needs were met.  No certain number of slides required.  A folder of pictures will be provided for students to use in power point.  (Pictures include the building, playground, various rooms in the building such as cafeteria, office, etc.  These pictures may be taken by STLP).  Resources: Libraries, interviews & Internet.  Share power point with class.

4th & 5th

Key Boarding 

POS-ELA-4-W-5 Students will write personal pieces to communicate ideas.

Lesson 1-10 -10 days- Using "Success with Keyboarding" curriculum

TLW use the Program “Ultra Keyboard” for assessment during following weeks.

Follow up:  TLW use the “Ultra Keyboard” program for 10 minutes at the beginning of each lab session.
