Oct. 1 2003 DOL Computer Tag
Objective: To use correct punctuation.
Activity: Students take turns at the computer in the order as posted. A list of sentences without punctuation (depending on the punctuation being taught) are provided in a Word Document. Type the sentences in black then set the letter color on red. The first student enters the correct punctuation in the appropriate location then quietly tags the next person on the list to go to the computer to correct the next sentence.
Review the sentences via a projector or scan converter.
Assessment: Students will complete a sentence.
Extension/Enrichment:
*Add other grammar skills as is the tradition with DOL.
*Do five sentences a day which will involve 5 students tagging. Then print a sheet per small group of students to check the sentences for correctness.
*Have sentences relate to content presently being taught in another subject.
*If providing sentences relating to content, have students to play reverse computer tag and create sentences with errors for the next day's computer tag.
*Provide a clue to direct students to correct skill being targeted.
*Individualize sentences according to student IEP. Remember the number on the name poster will match the number of the sentence.
Here is your first group of sentences for computer tag for a class of 17 students. Remember right click and "save target as" to download.

Activity:
After reading and/or listening to a chosen story from this site, decide how you want to retell the story. You will be retelling your story by using power point and the sound recorder. So, first rewrite your story like you want to tell it. Then divide your story into the parts that will go with illustrations you want to create with the Paint program or clipart by using a storyboard. Next use the sound recorder to record the parts of your story. Record one part for each file.
Then create your digital story using Microsoft Power Point or Pinnacle Studio by inserting Paint drawings and sound files. (note: with Pinnacle Studio you don't have to create sound files. You can record in Pinnacle Studio.)
Assessment: Student will complete the digital story as directed.
Extension/Enrichment:
Students can retell the story but change the characters.
Or
Use the same story line to tell another story.
Or
Students can write their own literary piece or personal narrative and illustrate in the same fashion. First the student should write the piece then decide on illustrations. During the story board process encourage revision of piece to go with illustrations. This may help the students to focus their writing, better organize the piece and/or provide richer detail.
February 24, 2003 On line Story

When the student has created a word with all the letters, the student must type the word in the box and click the "check" button.
Assessment: A button is provided on the site for the student to print work. Students must complete one or two words on assigned level of work.
Extension/Enrichment: Students can create a table in a word document providing letters to create one word. The document is printed and placed with a collection. Other students can choose one of these sheets, which they cut the letters apart and glue back together to form a word.
A reading and writing lesson
February 3, 2003 Developing Vocabulary and Focus
Objective: To choose richer vocabulary for a word using a Thesaurus which can help students acquire meaning for reading and help provide focus when writing a personal narrative.
Activity:
Students will have someone take a digital picture of them showing a facial expression that would have been shown during the special moment told about in a personal narrative. Then with the help of the Visual Thesaurus, students will create a list of words that describe the expression shown in the picture.
Assessment: Student will complete a list of words describing the expression.
Extension/Enrichment: Number the pictures and post on the wall near the computer. Create a word document listing number of picture for students to add words. Compare to see if students had the same idea about the expression shown in the picture.
January 22, 2003 Homophones
Another one computer idea.

November 18, 2002 Story Sequence
Another one computer idea.
Objective: To arrange a series of events in the correct order.
Activity:
Direct students to use this Story Sequence document which has a series of events listed in an incorrect order. This is a Word 2000 document where events have been placed in a text box which can be rearranged in correct order by clicking and dragging on the "fuzzy part" of the line around the text box. Further directions are given on the worksheet. The teacher may change the events in the text boxes to correspond with a story being read. Students are instructed to use the undo button to scramble the sentences back like they were found leaving them ready for the next student who visits the computer.
(Remember to cancel the permission window which sometimes only shows in the task tray,
OR Right click and save target as)
Assessment: Student will correctly sequence the events and check their answers by following directions.
Extension/Enrichment: Students can change the text in the boxes to list sequences of events that happened in a story they have read. Or use this as a graphic organizer to list events in a personal narrative they have written. Then highlight the text box that is the most important event and therefore should be the focus of their personal narrative.
November 11, 2002 Syllable Factory

You can also direct students to go to the Student Portal at TALK site and use the word Zone as the Key Word to find the activity.
Assessment: Student will complete directions given. Teacher will check for accuracy.
Extension/Enrichment: Students analyze words and illustrate letter sound variation by highlighting same sounds the same color. (click and drag over letters that make sounds, click on the down triangle beside the paintbrush entitled "Highlight color" and choose a color. If you want the color already shown under the brush, just click the brush icon.)
Thanks to Lauren Van Hook at Arlington Elementary for this idea and to Marcia Gross at Arlington Elementary for showing me this idea with her class.
September 27, 2002 Scrambled Sentences, Please
Another one computer idea.
Objective: To create sentences using words from the word wall. To create sentences from a given set of words which will include one or more word wall words.
Activity: Students type sentences using word processor, then highlight a word and click and drag into another position to scramble. The next student clicks and drags words back into correct order then types another sentence and scrambles for the next student.
Assessment: Student will complete directions given. Teacher will check for accuracy.
Extension/Enrichment: The student creates a sentence using one or more words from the word wall. Each word is typed into a box using a grid made with Microsoft Word Table tool. First student on the list goes to the computer during class and types two words in the box by their name (following the directions). When finished they tag the next person on the list. Students will be able to continue with the ongoing class while doing this daily routine.
| Student Name | Give two words with the short a sound. |
| John Doe |
Assessment: Student will complete directions given. Teacher can print daily sheet for documentation or check off skill as completed.

Activity: Before class begins, teacher will create a Word document possibly information from an internet site related to the social studies or science unit being studied. In class computer center or lab student opens the word document. (Note these will be "read only" documents because more than one person is opening the document. Doesn't matter because the student will need to save the document with their own name for future assessment.). Students highlight and bold the words that give the main ideas of the sentences and paragraphs.
*Hint: Have students to keep in mind, if they wanted someone else to scan over the material the bold words would give the reader the main idea of the piece.
Assessment: Student either prints or saves documents for teacher to assess work.
Extension/Enrichment: Students choose information from teacher selected sites (about units being studied), copy and paste into a Word document and bold important words for purpose of scanning.
