Live Streaming

There are two ways we can stream live to the web in Fayette County Schools. One is a simple IP video camera, which is also it's own "web server" so the video (sorry, no sound!) displays through the Internet in its own web page. Currently (June, 2002) only one of these cameras is available for use in Fayette County. Contact your TRT or STC for assistance.

The second is using RealServer - a much better solution if you have the resources and help. If you wish to use this capability (video or sound or both are possible), contact me for assistance. Below is a chart that lists the advantages and disadvantages of both:

Who can see it. Full video takes a LOT of bandwidth. Bandwidth use is multiplied by the number of people viewing the video, hence only a few people will be able to see things before the pipeline chokes. Video bandwidth can be scaled and routed, so that virtually any number of people can see the stream. However, not usually visible outside of the FCPS WAN.
Ease of use Very easy setup - plug into any network drop and go. Simple web reference for viewings possible. Relatively easy setup, but requires a dedicated computer, with a Quickcam and RealProducer installed. To view, direct reference through RealPlayer is possible, but embedded in a webpage is better (see below). Login procedures and rights to the RealServer must be obtained.
Who to contact STC or TRT - the camera can be reserved through the tech help desk. Jeffrey L. Jones, District Tech Resource Teacher
