E-Communication in the Classroom

There are dozens of ways in which you can use email and online threaded discussion in the classroom! Here are the steps you should take when examining this possibility:

  • Define your instructional goals: Some possibilities might include: transactive writing, research, cultural exchange, debate, or simply addressing an applicable technology standard.
  • Select your technology: Here are some of the choices, with a description of how the best apply.
    • The FCPS Forum is best for a focus on writing, and is also very good as a collaborative tool between classes, schools, and across distances.
    • Student Email makes for lively interaction across distances - some structure and monitoring is necessary.
    • Video Conferencing works well for face-to-face discussion across distances, but must be a scheduled special event
    • utilizing an electronic capability
  • Get help: Your first stop should be any instructional technology resource person in your building. Next will be your district tech resource teacher. Failing that, contact me. Many of the above require technical support as well, but they can be arranged for you.
