Welcome Fall!
Paula Whitmer and Leanna Prater are District Wide Technology Resource Teachers who can help out with your technology needs.  We hope in this newsletter you might find some interesting ideas, websites and lessons to keep you up to date with technology integration.

Elementary Technology Academy

This past month, the elementary technology resource teachers held the first Elementary Technology Academy. After a review of the new technology Program of Studies and Curriculum Framework, the TRTs shared how to plan a lesson which integrates technology. Grade levels then met and were given "just in time" resources for days 25-60 on the Curriculum Framework. If you didn't make it to the Academy, you can find the resources in SharePoint.

  • Go to : Fayette County SharePoint
(at home it will prompt you for your Fayette County Username(example: fayette\lprater) and Password)
  • Under Links, click on "Curriculum Framework"
  • Under Documents, click on "FCPS  Recommended Curriculum Framework
  • Click on the "Elementary School Recommended Curriculum" Framework" folder
  • Click on "K-5 Technology" folder
  • Click on "Elem Technology Academy" folder
  • You've found the resources!

You can sign up to attend one of the next academies (November 16th, January 18th and March 1) for wonderful technology integration ideas and a chance to win a fabulous prize!

Pumpkins (K-2)
Description:
A pumpkin is a vegetable related to the squash. Like other squash, pumpkins grow on vines and bushes. The pumpkin begins as a yellow flower. Once the flower is pollinated, the pumpkin emerges from the flower’s base. It starts out as a small green ball. As it grows bigger and ripens, most pumpkins will turn dark green and then to a deep shade of orange. There are also white and yellow pumpkins. Some pumpkins can grow to weigh as much as 800 pounds, or 363 kilograms. Miniature pumpkins are grown for decoration. In the autumn, pumpkins are harvested by hand.

Holiday Facts and Fun (K-2)
Description:
Children learn how Halloween began and how, over hundreds of years, it evolved into the fun-filled, spooky holiday we know today. Traditional games, such as bobbing for apples, are discussed, and the custom of trick-or-treating is explained. Youngsters find out why jack-o-lanterns are carved from pumpkins, and why bats and owls have become associated with the holiday. Halloween safety rules are covered in detail, including trick-or-treating with an adult, watching for traffic, refusing to accept goodies whose wrappings are suspect, and making certain that an adult examines anything that will be eaten. As a special feature, an amusing Halloween tale of the supernatural is included in the presentation.

Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? (2-7)
Description:
In the days of colonial America, Samuel Adams likes to wander around Boston talking to people about how much he didn't like England. "Why don't you get a horse?" his cousin John would ask. But Sam wasn't interested - until John told him that he should ride a horse for the good of his country like George Washington and John Hancock did.

How to show only the Fayette Co. recipients when addressing an email in Outlook.

When you get ready to send an email and you click on TO, do you see the Global Address List first? If you want to change it, you can! Here's how:

  • Open Outlook
  • Select Tools from the menu bar
  • Then choose Address Book
  • In the new window, choose Tools from the menu bar
  • Then choose Options
  • You will then see a new window with Show this address list first.
  • At the top where it says Show this address list first: select the Staff & Resources under Fayette Staff.  (If you want to also see students, choose Staff & Students & Resources.  Or if you only want to see Students, choose Students.)

Now give it a test drive. Open a new message and click the TO button. What do you see?

One thing you can remember is that for any person or group in Fayette County (or any school in KY) all you have to do is type their name (overstreet, kim) or group name (FCPS Teachers) in the TO section and it will find them. You separate two names with a semi-colon. And if you want to make sure you have the right person or group, you can click the check names button (on the toolbar ). When it's underlined, you know you've got a valid address.

Installing new fonts

Have you ever wished that you had some different cool fonts to use on documents you create for your students?  Here is one way you can get those.  Keep in mind that it's not a good idea to use different fonts for text on webpages or email, because in order to see the font it must be installed on the viewers machine.  But for use in documents that will be printed, it's fine.

  • Here's one site I use for fonts http://www.coolarchive.com/fonts.php
  • When you find one you like, click on the font example
  • When you see the window to Open, Save or Cancel, choose Save and save it to your desktop.
  • Then choose Open in the next window that pops up.
  • WinZip should open then and you will need to click on the .ttf file once to highlight it.
  • Then click the Extract button on the toolbar
  • click once on Desktop to highlight it in the Folder list
  • Then click Extract
  • Minimize everything and you will see the .ttf file on your desktop (as well as a .zip file)
  • Click Start
  • Choose Control Panel
  • Double click the Fonts folder
  • If the folder opens to full screen then restore it down so that you can see your desktop.
  • Drag the .ttf file from your desktop over and drop it anywhere in the open Fonts folder window
  • It will run a quick installation and then you are done.
  • Now you can delete the .ttf and .zip files that are on your desktop.
