                 Inspiration Basics
Inspiration® by Inspiration Software, Inc.

Inspiration is used for brainstorming, concept mapping, multimedia planning, idea mapping, and webbing.

This is the opening Inspiration screen.

A main idea symbol is always present when opening a new Inspiration file.  The files open in the Diagram view.  Ideas can be linked to this main idea by using the “Rapid Fire” tool or the “Create” tools.  The Diagram can be changed to an Outline view by simply clicking on the “Outline” button.  The same information that is in the Diagram view will be in the Outline view.  Work can be done in either view.

The “Link” button allows you to add a link between two symbols.  Click on the “Link” button, then click first on the symbol that you want to link to originate from and then click second on the symbol that you want to point to with the link.

The "Arrange" tool allows you to select the arrangement you want for your web.

The “Add Note” button allows you to add notes for a particular symbol that is needed for a later time.  These notes will disappear when the Notes window is closed, but can be brought back up by double-clicking on the top left red solid square when the symbol is selected.  The notes will always be visible in the Outline view.

The "Hyperlink" button allows you to create a hyperlink to a website, email message, another file (either a new Inspiration file or another program file) from a selected symbol.

The "Spell" button checks the spelling in your file.

The bottom of the screen contains many useful tools.  The ability to format the text and symbols is available here.  Select the desired font, font size, bold, italics, underlined, text color, symbol colors, drawing tools, nudge arrows, and the position hand from this menu bar.  The magnification of the view can be adjusted in this area as well (see 200% example above).  Click on the smaller "mountains" to reduce magnification.  Click on the larger "mountains" to increase magnification.

This is the first of many Symbol libraries.  Each symbol can be different by selecting the icon that you want.  Use the arrows at the top to navigate between libraries.  The arrow pointing down will list all the library categories.

This is a sample outline based on a diagram.  Notice that there are a few tools that are different.  To change back to the diagram view, simply click on the “Diagram” button.  Topics and subtopics can be added as well as notes by clicking on the appropriate button.  Some students may prefer to work in the outline view, so sufficient modeling time should be given to this view as well as the diagram view.

From the Outline view, students may export their outline directly to any word processor and continue revising and editing there.  To do this, click on "File", then select "Export", and select the word processor (.rtf) format, then click "Save".
