 Kentucky Benchmarks for the AASL Information Literacy Standards in grades 3, 5, 8, 12 have been developed. Using Kentucky's Core Content and Kentucky's Learning Goals and Expectations, as well as, the Program of Studies Implementation Manual will insure support for information literacy, literature and reading.

Information Literacy Processes

To be information literate, an individual must recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use it.  S(he) must be an Information Problem Solver.

    Teaching Students to be ethical users of information

    Teaching Students about the Dewey Decimal System

    • Let's Do Dewey Dewey Duck. Melvil Dewey. Click on the appropriate Dewey to begin the Library exercise on the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
    • Do the Dewey - Basic guide to Dewey for grades 4-12.
     

    Teaching Students about Evaluating Books and Websites

    • Kathy Schrock's Critical Evaluation Survey's Find a series of evaluation surveys to use with students who are learning to evaluate a website.  You will find one each at the elementary, middle, and secondary school levels.

    Teaching Students Electronic Searching Techniques

    • Research Cards (Elementary and Middle) a tool to help students  organize your research for reports. 

    Other Instructionally Helpful Sites

    • International Children's Digital Library - a place where kids all over the world can find lots of books from many different countries. It's a place where kids can read as much as they want without having to pay a lot of money or travel very far to find the books. If you have a computer and access to the Internet, you can see books from places like Croatia, Egypt, Japan, New Zealand, the United States and more!
    • KET - Kentucky Educational Television is a resource for information delivery to Kentucky's students and staff
    • Henry Hikes to Fitchburg by D.B. Johnson - This book is based on Walden by Henry David Thoreau and is for ages 4-104.  Cyberbee has supplied activities, links and a teacher page to be used with students.
