American Fact Finder from the U.S. Census Bureau.  Contains Census 2000 information.
Bartleby.com - Organized and searchable by a variety of reference, verse, fiction and non-fiction topics.
Best Information on the Net Features a variety of reference sources for secondary school students
Biographical Dictionary
- Concise profiles of over 28,000 men and women from ancient times to the present.

Encyclopedia Smithsonian - topical hyperlinked arrangement from A to Z about the resources in the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C.
Infoplease - Online version of the popular print almanac.  A related site for children is Factmonster.com
The Internet Public Library has three levels of reference and homework help.  
iTools provides quick access to the following tools: language tools, search tools, reference tools, financial tools, map tools,  and internet tools.
Library Spot - a free virtual library resource center with acronyms, almanacs, associations, public records, etc.  Look for the featured link for K-12.
MarcoPolo - Standards-based Internet content for the K-12 teacher and classroom, developed by the nation's content experts.
Ready Reference Website - Ready Reference uses a subject index based on Dewey Decimal Classification. This is a numerical classification scheme for breaking down fields of knowledge using numbers.

Kids' Almanac - This site from Yahooligans features factual information arranged by category. 
The Old Farmer's Almanac - A web version of "North American's oldest continuously published periodical".
World Almanac for Kids - This website is a companion to the book by the same title.  It is updated daily.

Atlapedia Online - find color physical and political maps about countries of the world.

DICTIONARIES

Little Explorers Picture Dictionary - A picture-dictionary format is used to link to hundreds of carefully-chosen child-friendly sites around the world. Since the pictures are links, even pre-readers can surf with a minimum of help and guidance from their favorite adult. Older kids can use Little Explorers as a school reference.  Users may choose to use one of the following versions. English-French, English-German, English-Portuguese, or the English-Spanish version.
