August
     * Web/MAX is available for booking for the 2003-2004 school year.
Your email login is used as your USER ID in WebMax.  "media" is the first time go-in password and should be changed to something unique to only you.
     * New teachers in your school who want to use Web/MAX to book items must call Media Services TRC (381-3888) or email us at mscirc@fayette.k12.ky.us.  They must be added or updated to use the booking system correctly.
     *  Remember to search Web/MAX when you are helping teachers find sources for the curriculum.  Many new titles have been added this summer that support the curriculum in your building.
*If you would like a demo during a staff meeting on the TRC and Web/MAX please contact Mary Lou Corman or Nancy Strassner.  It can be demonstrated in as little as 10 minutes for individuals and large and small groups.
     * Please make copies of the NEW BROCHURE FOR THE TRC for the teachers in your building.
     * The TRC has meeting space to accommodate approximately 35 people.  Karen Goocey (381-3881) will book that space.  Nancy Strassner or Mary Lou Corman can set up items for preview as well as be available to assist those who might want to browse and/or checkout resources.

September
The TRC has the materials from the Special Education Teacher Resource Center that was located on the Tates Creek Campus.   We are in the process of adding them to Web/MAX.   Please inform your special education teachers that the materials are now housed at the Teacher Resource Center.  If your special education teacher can’t find the materials by searching Web/MAX (web address here) , have them call (381-3888) or visit the TRC, reminding them that we are open on Thursdays (regular school days) until 6 p.m.
This month’s lesson plan and Web/MAX bibliography is on Nutrition and is aimed at middle school students.

October

We continually add new materials to our collection. Each record searched in WebMax that is new will have a flashing symbol with the record that says 'new' indicating that these titles are new to our collection, not necessarily new materials. It will remain for 1 year. Look for the copyright or publishing date that is on the record to see how current it is. For the 2000 years, it will have the last digit of the year.

This month’s lesson plan and bibliography is Apples and Oranges Ones. A math concepts lesson plan for grades K-5.

November/December
The Teacher Resource Center is open until 6 p.m. on Thursdays when school is in session. Two staff members will be available to help with finding materials and using the equipment. The entrance to the Center is directly across from Lafayette High School girl’s softball field.

Teachers visiting the TRC may park in any available spaces next to the Louie Mack Building or in the student parking lot behind Lafayette High School. If they arrive before 3:00 and they do not have an FCPS parking sticker they should put a sign on their dash “Working at TRC”.

February

The Teacher Resource Center has a meeting area that can accommodate up to 35 people. We can provide an internet-ready computer with a projector, an overhead projector, a VCR and a DVD for your use. We will be happy to explain the services we offer at the Teacher Resource Center. We will also have staff available to assist your group members. If you or a group of your teachers would like to reserve the meeting area, contact Media Services at 381-3881.

March
With the recent upgrade of the system that runs Web/MAX we also received a couple of improvements on Web/MAX.  When you are on the search page, you can choose to search by type of media and grade level.  If you do not search using these parameters, you can hide them on your screen.  You can also hide your display settings after you set them. The second improvement is after you have searched a keyword or subject. If you were searching for anything we own on animals you would find that we have 456 items that contain the word animals. They are listed alphabetically by title. Before you would just have to keep clicking the words "more items" to get to the next page. Now you can choose a page number and go to directly that page. If you are looking for something toward the end of the alphabet, you can now skip over the beginning.  Be sure and check out the printed bibliography for African Americans that comes via the courier with an accompanying lesson plan.

April
The Teacher Resource Center has some equipment that is circulated. We have DVD Players, Digital Camera, Slide Projectors, Overhead Projectors, and Free-Standing Screens. The equipment is not listed in Web/MAX. The digital camera can be checked out for three days. The DVD players can be checked out for 5 days and extended if the need arises. The rest of the equipment can be checked for 2 weeks and extended. To check out a piece of equipment, call the TRC at 381-3888. You will be responsible for picking it up and returning to the center. The equipment WILL NOT be sent through the courier. Take a look at this month’s lesson plan, The Year of the Monkey and bibliographies on China and Mammals.

May
The end of the year is fast approaching, but I know that you and your teachers are already thinking about next year.   The Teacher Resource will be closed from June 14th through June 18th.  We will be spending that time working on Inventory and Database Maintenance.   Web/MAX will be open for booking on or before July 1st.    If your teachers would like us to book their requests over the summer, they may send written requests to our office beginning on May 1.

Also please remind your teachers that anything that they have checked out from the Teacher Resource Center, needs to be put in the courier bags by the end of the day on the last day of school.

We have new Ellison Dies in the TRC.   They include 5 different bugs or insects, 7 dies of musical notes and symbols, a 3-D geometric set, a Native American head and a bat.  For more information about these dies and all the dies that we have in the TRC check our website http://teach.fcps.net/trt11/libtechserv/CentralTRCEquip.htm

Check out the lesson plan and Web/Max bibliography on Reptiles and Snakes sent in the courier packet.
