This Summer at Media Services
This has been a short busy summer here at Media Services. Our main priority has been to get the materials from Russell Library moved to their new schools. Seems like 02-03 purchase orders have been late in being  generated and late in arrival. As of the middle of July, the first shipment of 13 orders had not arrived.  We work on them as they come in however, since they are and always have been a priority.  We will still be working on the items we received from you at the end of last year by the time you get back. Please know that we get them to you as soon as we can.

Looking for magazine selections for your students and staff?
Take a look at School Library Journal's Periodicals Information Directory 5/1/03 where several have been reviewed. http://slj.reviewsnews.com/index.asp?layout=articlePrint&articleID=CA240989  FCPS now has two vendors for magazines: Popular Subscription Service and Black Magazine Agency.  A cost analysis showed that Black has overall discounted prices for student magazines and Popular has the overall discounted prices for professional magazines.

FCPS TEACHER RESOURCE CENTER
The FCPS Teacher Resource Center (TRC) opens for the 2003-4 school year.   The purpose of the center is to provide a workplace with a variety of educational and professional resources that will enhance the education of the FCPS students.  For 20+ years Media Services Circulation has provided materials to teachers within our system that support the curriculum.  These materials can be searched and booked via a website by the teachers within FCPS.  These materials can also be booked via fax, email, phone or walk-in.  The expansion into a resource center involved arranging some extended hours on Thursdays during the school year, making equipment accessible for teacher use, and adding some non-circulating teacher resources.

As a School Library Media Specialist you can promote the use of the TRC by:
     * Inviting Mary Lou Corman and/or Nancy Strassner to talk to your staff (10 minutes will work)
     * Sharing the brochure given to you at the opening about the TRC
     * Forwarding emails sent out by Nancy or Mary Lou about the TRC to the school staff
     * Searching WebMAX for teachers to help find materials that support the curriculum they are teaching
     * Giving the link to the teachers for WebMAX and explaining the delivery system
     * Showing them the site for the TRC as well as explaining how WebMAX and the delivery system works
     * Sharing the fact that we are open on Thursdays during the school year until 6:00 if they want to come and browse
     * Sharing the fact that we have multiple resources that are non-circulating but can be used here at the center.

The TRC is a division of Media Services, which is in the department of Technology.  It is located in the Louie Mack Building behind Lafayette High School, across from the girls’ softball field at 460 Springhill Drive.  Parking can be in the lot behind the building or in the student lot behind Lafayette High School.   Those people who arrive before 3:00 on a school day should place a note on their dash that says, “Working at Media Services”.

World Book Online
WB has made some changes in its online format.  This district paid source is now called the World Book Online Reference Center and can be used within the fayette domain seamlessly at http://www.worldbookonline.com/.  To explore the changes, look for What's New.  You can preview from the EXPLORE link a capsule of  the site's new look and features.

The Special Education Teacher Resource Center once housed in a portable on the Tates Creek Campus, has been moved to the FCPS TRC at Media Services.    The staff is working very hard to enter the materials into the WebMAX system.   Once entered those materials will be available to all the teachers in Fayette County.
