One of the National Education Goals is for all Americans to be literate and to possess the knowledge and skills to compete in a global economy.  This emphasis on information literacy, as referenced in the American Association of  School Librarians (AASL) Information Literacy Standards, increases the importance of  library media center  and the library media specialist  within the school curriculum.  The Kentucky Benchmarks for the Information Literacy Standards provide links to resources which the LMS can easily incorporate (or adapt) within his/her own school media program.

Kentucky's Core Content for assessment   has been identified as the content essential for all students to know.  Kentucky educators have delineated many academic expectations that require students to access and synthesize information in multiple formats.  Beyond Proficiency: Essentials of a Distinguished Library Media Program (p. 6) lists examples of specific academic expectations supported by the school Library Media Program.

Library Research Service's research has shown that school library media programs can have a positive impact on student achievement.  By incorporating national and state standards, benchmarks, and goals for student learning, this site is designed to provide   Kentucky library media specialists the curriculum connections which merge literacy and content.

The curriculum connections database contains student-centered lessons and activities submitted by pre-service, practicing and retired Kentucky school media specialists.
