Beyond Proficiency (KDE 2001)has identified the following four library media goal for students as they relate to Kentucky Academic Expectations.

  1. Use a variety of library media resources and technologies to locate, organize, and present information relevant to a specific need or problem.  AE 1.1, 1.10, 1.16, 5.3, 5.5, 6.2, 6.3

  2. Evaluate, interpret, and select information that meets their needs.  AE 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 5.2, 5.4, 5.5, 6.2, 6.3

  3. Function as independent learners by using library media resources as well as resources beyond the school site.  AE 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.16, 3.7, 6.2, 6.3

  4. Pursue areas of personal interest through reading and research in the library media center and beyond.  AE 1.2, 3.7, 5.1, 5.5

Building Information Literacy:  Strategies for Developing Informed Decision-Makers and Independent Lifelong Learners  The Prince Edward Island Department of Education launched the development of an "Information Literacy" document for the public education system in this province. Find information and strategies useful to Kentucky educators as well. 

Information Power:  Building Partnerships for Learning Brochure “lists the Nine Information Literacy Standards and suggests ways that Information Power can benefit students, teachers, library media specialists and administrators. A great tool to use with your educational partners when advocating for Information Power in your school or district.”

Know It All  - A KET video offering.  "Know It All includes nine programs for classroom use and four professional development programs. The student programs introduce a four-step learning process for gathering, presenting, and evaluating information in science, social studies, humanities, and language arts. The programs for teachers focus on introducing learning skills, collaborative teaching methods, and information literacy standards developed by the American Association of School Librarians and the Association for Educational Communications Technology.  The professional development programs will be included in block feeds of the series.

21st Century Literacies - This Information Literacies Curriculum presents the process and essential skills for embedding information literacy strategies across all areas of the curriculum.  This resource was created to support the Pacific Bell/UCLA Initiatives for 21st Century Literacies.

Picturing Books: A Website about Picture Books - Picturing Books contains links to 1) using picture books; 2) resources; 3) just for kids; 4) palette; and 5) links.  Picturing Books is a nonprofit website created in 1999. It was developed and is maintained by Denise I. Matulka, a true lover of picture books. This website presents an in-depth look at picture books, their history, definition, elements, types, genre and  style.  Samples are included.
