The primary function of a library media center is to provide service to its patrons. In order to facilitate this, the status of each item must be maintained through an efficient circulation system. Statistics may be gathered which are vital to the evaluation and reporting of needed changes.
Establish a written policy and obtain approval from the administration/ council. Every effort should be made to inform patrons of the policy through students’ handbooks, orientation, etc.
Length of circulation of materials will depend upon the size of the collection, format of the materials and demand placed on the collection for class use.
Books are usually checked out for 1-2 weeks.
Reference and reserve books may be limited to overnight use or for single class period.
Nonprint circulation depends on availability of materials and equipment. In most instances they are circulated for overnight or for a few days.
Philosophies vary on the subject of charging fines for overdue materials. A library media center that does charge should observe certain rules.
Always attempt to be fair.
Make the fine policy known through the library policy.
Provisions should be made for the student to work off the obligation.
Determine fine and send notice to student.
After a reasonable amount of time, parent and students should be notified concerning the replacement price of the material. It is wise to develop a library clearance procedure so that students withdrawing from the school will be sure all media center materials are returned.
