A webquest for Ms. Housekeeper's classes at Southern Middle School
Created by Kim Overstreet, District Technology Resource Teacher

Introduction

What if you were a girl and you weren't born in the United States? What would your life be like? What would your future hold? And are there any places in the world where you might enjoy more freedom and greater equality? This activity invites students to learn about women's rights today in countries around the world.

Task

Your teacher will divide you into small groups.  Each group will then be assigned a group of countries to research.  Your group should study the role of women in each of your countries and create one product to use when presenting this information to your class.  The product should be one of the following: a PowerPoint presentation, a newsletter using Publisher, a brochure using Publisher or a webpage using FrontPage.

Process

  1. After your teacher has assigned your group of countries, use these resources to begin gathering information.
bulletGroup 1 -- Morocco, Peru, Great Britain, Bosnia
bulletGroup 2 -- Russia, Nigeria, Canada, Afghanistan
bulletGroup 3 -- Germany, China, Ivory Coast, United Arab Emirates
bulletGroup 4 -- Uganda, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey
bulletGroup 5 -- Kuwait, France, Guatemala, Ethiopia
bulletGroup 6 -- Egypt, Mexico, Italy, Jordan
bulletGroup 7 -- Sweden, India, Kenya, Uzbekistan
bulletGroup 8 -- Zimbabwe, Japan, Denmark, Pakistan
  2. Look for information to answer these questions and anything else you find that is interesting or important for each of your countries.  Don't get bogged down trying to answer one question if you don't find the answer, move on.
bulletDo women hold public office in this country?
    bulletCan women vote?
bulletHow are women/girls treated by their families?
bulletAre there special laws or rules that apply to females only?
    bulletDescribe education of females.
bulletAre there any government documents that discuss women rights?
bulletDo women make up part of the country's workforce?
  3. Gather, organize and display this information in a presentation, brochure, newsletter, or webpage.  Be sure to look at the rubric below as a guide.
  4. Cite your sources on the last page of your presentation or somewhere in your brochure, newsletter or on your webpage.  You can use the Citation Machine to help create the citations for any website or print material.
  5. Present your information to the class.
