Creating Alternative Text Tags Using FrontPage 2003

Alternative text is used by web browsers to display text during image downloads for users who have graphics turned off and for users who rely on screen-reading software to convert graphics on the screen to spoken words. Alternative text can, also, be used for hyperlinks.

To Add Alternative Text To A Graphic:

  • Insert the graphic into the web page.

  • Right-click on top the graphic and choose Picture Properties.

  • In the Picture Properties box, choose the General tab.

  • Click inside the box next to Text: to display the green check mark.

  • In the white box to the right of Text: type the text for the picture.

  • Choose OK.

  • Save the page.

To Add Alternative Text To A Hyperlink:

  • Type the words for the hyperlink on the web page.
  • Highlight the words.
  • Right-click on top of the word(s). Choose Hyperlink.  OR  From the task bar, choose the world-with-the-chain link to insert hyperlink.

  • In the Address: box type the URL (web address) for the hyperlink.
  • Choose the Screen Tip button at the top of the Insert Hyperlink box.

  • In the Screen Tip text box type the words you want displayed for the alternative text of the hyperlink.
  • Choose OK.
  • Choose OK.
  • Save the page.
