Installation of QuickTime Version 6

Instructional Technology

Fayette County does not produce QuickTime content, but if you need QuickTime installed for other reasons, the following is a walk-through of a non-default install (required to avoid it taking over media playing in general). This page is for Windows only - if you have another platform, please see Apple's QuickTime web page for your player.

1) Uninstall any previous QuickTime installation If you came here because your QuickTime installation is giving errors, an uninstall is advisable. Many versions of QuickTime have an "Uninstall" option in their menu - use it. If not, go to "Control Panel" (its location will depend on which version of Windows you have) and choose "Add/Remove Programs." Find QuickTime in the list, and click "Uninstall."
2) Download the installation files
Install Shell
Install data
downloadThere are two - the install shell, and the data. You will need to Right-click each of the two links to the left, and "Save target as..." to the same location for both (suggestion: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\).
3) Begin the installation install 1Using "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer," find and double-click the installation file "QuickTimeInstaller.exe" wherever you placed it. After the install wizard starts, you'll need to click "OK" on the first screen, and "Agree" for the end user license agreement.

4) File Location

The default file location is fine - click "Next.".File location

5) Custom Install

Custom
Make sure you check "Custom" install here - it's how you avoid QuickTime taking control of your media files!

6) Components

Components
Under ...components," the only thing you need check is "QuickTime Essentials." I generally UN-check QuickTime for Java, though it may not make much difference.

7) Folders, and Registration

Registration
The default "Folders" location is fine (click "Next"). Next is registration, which you can skip, since you just need the free player (click "Next").

8) QuickTime Settings -  MIME

MIME settings After finishing the install, QuickTime will launch. Click "Next" on the first screen. On the second, click the "MIME Settings..." button near the bottom.

9) MIME settings

MIME settingsClick on the "+" to the left ot expand any category, and click in the box just to the right of that to select or de-select any file types. De-select all of MPEG and MP3, and de-select MIDI under Audio, and all but QuickTime Image File under Images.

10) QuickTime Launches

LaunchQuickTime will now launch. De-select "...README...," but leave "...launch..." selected. Click "Close."

11) QuickTime Preferences
