Celebration of STLP Day at James Lane Allen Elementary

JLA students celebrating STLP Day with a breakfast.Ms. Marefat gives out awards to STLP students.

In 2001, then Gov. Paul Patton declared December 10th as STLP Day.  So on December 10, 2004, the STLP students at James Lane Allen celebrated STLP Day by having a breakfast of donuts, cheese, and fruit.  Students enjoyed having an opportunity to get together to celebrate being a part of STLP.  JLA student with video camera

Students received membership cards, participation certificates and other awards during the breakfast.

No Limits logoFIRST Lego League - No Limits!

Students at Millcreek Elementary, Mary Todd Elementary, Lexington Traditional Magnet School, and Winburn Middle recently participated in the NO LIMITS competition with the FIRST Lego League (FLL) at Northern Kentucky University.  This year's competition focused on people with physical challenges.  Many people have difficulty moving or walking, or trouble reading a distant sign or climbing stairs. In NO LIMITS, FLL teams find ways to help people with different levels of physical ability.Mary Todd students at the competition table

The STLP teams had to create a Lego robot which would assist a person in meeting some of these every day challenges.  The groups programmed their robot to do selected activities.  Some of the activities required a change to the actual robot during the competition.  During the competition, the robots could be programmed to retrieve a pair of glasses, move a CD onto its case, push in chairs at a table, go up some stairs, close a gate, feed the pets, and a few more everyday tasks.Adult wheelchair football team

The students also had an opportunity to see an adult wheelchair football game demonstration.  A few students were then recruited to play football in a wheelchair with the adults.  The students realized how tricky a task this can be!

Winburn students hard at work. All four teams did an excellent job at the competition.  Winburn Middle's group was honored by receiving third place in the Teamwork Awards.  There were a total of thirty teams from all of the state at the competition. Congratulations to all the students and teachers who participated!

There will be a demonstration of some of the Lego robots at the upcoming FCPS Technology Fair on March 19th at Tates Creek High School.  If you'reMary Todd students and their robot. interested in seeing these hard working students, join us between 9:00 A.M. and 11:15 A.M. in the Tates Creek gymnasium and cafeteria wing.  The Technology Fair is free and open to the public.
