Plant Parts

http://teach.fcps.net/talk/lesson_display.asp?lessonID=58

The Great Plant EscapeStudents will learn about the parts of a plant, including the roots, stem, leaves, flowers, and fruit. They will complete a complex concept map as they read an online text. New vocabulary words are hyper linked to an online plant dictionary to further explain their meanings. Use the vocabulary activities to help students understand them.

Review:
If you are looking for a book of adventure about an orphaned boy who against all odds sets out to find his long lost father, then you need to read Bud, Not Buddy.

The setting of the story takes place in two places in Michigan during a time of great economic depression in the United States.

The main character in this story is Bud Caldwell who has been tossed to and fro to various orphanages since losing his mother at the age of 5. He meets many colorful characters along the adventure that he decides to take. One man by the name of "Lefty" Lewis assists him along the journey to find his home. If I told you anymore...the story would not be as mysterious.

One of my favorite highlights of the book is when Bud escapes from a foster home where he is subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. You will love what he does to the little boy he is staying with to teach him not to mess with Bud Caldwell. Shhhh! My lips are sealed.

Overall, this book was not only funny, but a little scary in that this character was probably based upon a real person who went through similar trials and tough times. It's amazing to think that an 10 year old could do as well as he did in the time period this story is set in. This is a story you will not want to miss as it is hilariously funny while teaching about a time period in the United States. I recommend this book to mature third graders and above.
