PowerPoints on the Wampanoag Tribe - James Lane Allen

On November 27, the 2/3 classes at James Lane Allen Elementary opened up their classrooms to family and friends to showcase what they had been learning about the Wampanoag Indians as part of their studies related to Thanksgiving.  Each student created a PowerPoint presentation about the Wampanoag Indians and how they lived.  They focused on their shelter, clothing, food, and lifestyle.  The classes of Ms. Porter, Ms. Hardman, Ms. Cornelius, and Ms. Hedges invited guests to join them as each student presented their PowerPoint creation.  A taste-testing feast of Thanksgiving foods followed the festivities in the cafeteria.

Building a Community - James Lane Allen

In Ms. Bernhardt's 3rd grade classroom, the students have been learning about communities. As a part of their studies, they created a 3-D map of the community they created. The map made up a bulletin board display in the classroom. To create the buildings for their community, Ms. Bernhardt's students used a program called Community Construction Kit. They each designed their own building, printed it out, and assembled it into a 3-D model. These models were then added to the map of the community on the bulletin board with very impressive results!

Digital Storytelling/Multimedia Presentations Take a Different Look - Northern Elementary

[See the videos in Through a Student's Eyes]

After teachers at Northern Elementary saw a sample digital storytelling project created by one of their own, Trish Irvin, five other teachers jumped quickly on board. The teachers used the basic concept of digital storytelling to have their students develop multimedia presentations on topics they have been studying. The teachers and students were focusing on the reading, writing, and speaking components of literacy by completing these projects. The teachers used the opportunity to address several teacher and student technology standards. The students learned how to scan an image, save the image in the correct format in PhotoShop Elements, then how to import the images into Pinnacle Studio 8. Then the students learned how to record their voices to go with the images. The students told what they had learned about the content they had been studying. So far, five teachers and their students have created these multimedia presentations. Three teachers have first grade students, one teacher has third grade Northern Elementary - Click to see the video students, and the final teacher has fourth grade students. The students were motivated to write their best, read their best, and speak their best as a part of these projects.
