TIPS STLP News

STLP is active in the Lexington community!

Winburn Middle STLP supports the HOPE Center -- You can, too!

Winburn's STLP kids are collecting socks for the Hope Center from now until Feb 11th. They are sponsoring an opportunity to win two basketball tickets to the UK vs. GA game (February 11, 2003) for a pair of clean adult socks or $1.00. The STLP group will then buy socks and take them over to the Hope Center and take a tour after Feb 11th.  Contact LaVece Hughes for your chance to win!

Picadome Elementary STLP supports the residents of Lafayette Country Place

Picadome Elementary's STLP group went to the Lafayette Country Place nursing home in late November. They took digital pictures of some of the nursing home residents. They had permission from guardians or from the residents themselves. The students then created Christmas cards with the residents' pictures on them.

In early December, they returned to the nursing home with the cards and candy canes. They made three cards for each of the residents who had their picture taken. These cards were given to the residents so they could send them to family or friends. While delivering the cards, the students also sang carols and gave candy canes to residents who had not had their pictures taken.

It was a great experience. The residents and staff were very appreciative. They plan to try to do it again next year.  Contact Melissa Moore for more information about this activity.

Breckinridge Elementary and The Academy at Lexington STLP demonstrate how communication has changed over time.

The 5th grade students at Breckinridge have been learning about communication and how it has changed society and culture over time.  They are exploring the types of communication that involve a computer that may affect them in future careers and are learning how to use that technology.

As a result of these experiences the 5th grade STLP group at Breckinridge teleconferenced with the STLP group from The Academy using Microsoft’s Netmeeting software. The two coordinators, Mr. Hall and Mrs. Humlong, connected using their computers.  Mrs. Humlong sent video along with audio.  Both coordinators demonstrated the software and then several students connected with each other.   They found out some information about the other person and then opened the white board and played Tic Tac Toe and Hangman.

As a result of this positive interaction, Mr. Hall and Mrs. Humlong hope to do this activity with their 5th grade classes.  The STLP students in those classrooms will be able to assist their classmates when this exciting event occurs!

Contact Janyl Humlong for more information.

Beaumont Middle STLP attended the Region 5 Fall Conference

The STLP students were able to attend the Region 5 Fall Conference in Georgetown, KY, for the first time this year.  The students were very excited about the opportunity to share with other students what they have been doing in STLP, but seemed even more excited about what they saw and learned from the other Region 5 students.  Upon returning to school, one student created a PowerPoint summarizing the conference.  Contact Kathy Crouch for more information.
