In The News

Current events provide interesting and engaging topics for discussion and reading.  In this lesson you may opt to use the site, View of the News, in a variety of ways.

Before you have students read various newspapers and magazines you may want to begin by having a discussion with students about what makes news news?  To do this you may use the Inspiration file based on the Frayer model which demonstrates attributes, characteristics, examples and non-examples of a given topic of the news.

Once students have an idea of what makes news news determine the purpose for them accessing and reading an article.  Is it for thier own pleasure and enjoyment?  Is it to informally share and discuss information they learn?  Is it to formally present information they learned from the article to the class?  The purpose for reading will dictate which of the following tools they will want to use during their reading to take notes.

Note-taking for personal use and informal discussions.

Note-taking to use to create a formal presentaion.

After reading the material provide students an opportunity to share and discuss what they have read.  If you choose to have students do formal presenations of the information you may use this sample template.
