Science-Based Literacy Activities

Deriving meaning from text in the area of science requires specific skills that are not necessary for reading literary works. Building literacy in science requires specific attention to the unique aspects of science texts. These texts often include specialized vocabulary, technical phrases, diagrams, scientific symbols and more. Providing specific strategies to assist students in gaining meaning from the text is critical to maximizing their understanding of scientific concepts.

The lessons in this section are designed to provide teachers sample lessons that address fostering literacy within Science.

 

 
 

Plant Parts   (19518)

  Students will learn about the parts of a plant, including the roots, stem, leaves, flowers, and fruit. They will complete a complex concept map as they read an online text.
