Ancient Greece Web Tour

You are about to visit some special websites that will show a super view of the actual Parthenon in Greece.  Literacy involves both critically reading texts as well as viewing photographs and drawings.  Through these websites you will gain a first hand look at this amazing structure!  Watch for specialized vocabulary throughout these websites.  Incorporate that vocabulary into your answers. 

Follow directions and answer questions as you enter these websites.

  2. On this page, click on Athena and Other Statues.  Using this information answer the following:

    A.  Who created the statue of Athena?

    B.  Give 2 facts about her statue.

  3. At the bottom of this page, pick one of the three world famous city icons.  Use this in small or large version to answer the following:

    C.  Is the city icon decorative or functional?

    D.  What message does this icon give about its city?  How does that message reflect what is important?

    E.  What icon do you think Lexington should create that symbolizes our city?

  4. Go back to the main Parthenon page and click on Form & Function.  As you scroll down and read, answer these questions:

    F.  Why was the temple built?

    G.  How long did it take to build?

    H.  What were its dimensions?

  5. Choose a building on the bottom of this page.  Click on it to see it up close!  Then answer the following:

    I.  Why might the architects of the building you chose have decided to model the design like the Parthenon?

    J.  Do you think buildings designed in the 21st century will be in the style of the Parthenon?  Why or why not?

  6. Return to the main Parthenon page and this time, click on Columns of Marble.  Examine and read info to answer the following:

    K.  How many tons of marble built the Parthenon?

    L.  How did the Greeks move the heavy block from the mountainside?

  7. Look at the close-up views highlighted in red towards the bottom of the page.  These are neat!
