Stage:
Discussion: Although this lesson sounds very much like it's
student-centered, it's still very teacher-directed, with only a specific
discovery objective. It utilizes only a small bit of the capability of this
software. Still, it's certainly higher than Stage 2.
Enhancements:
- If the students were not told what they must discover, it
might qualify as a Stage 4 lesson. For example, they could be assigned to
groups, told to discover as much as they could about the interior and
exterior angles of triangles, and to justify their conclusions. This would
place the lesson firmly in Stage 4.
- As before, specifying Geometer's Sketchpad as the tool of choice takes
this exercise out of the running for Stage 5. In the pursuit of triangles'
angles at this level, making a variety of tools available - from compasses
and straightedges to Internet resources to several possible software
packages - and allowing the students to choose the tool they wanted to use,
would do the trick.
