Showcase Project Information - STEM Fair 2009

Purpose: Students demonstrate an authentic project that directly impacts a classroom, school, or community.

1.

One to four students may present an authentic project that directly impacts their classroom, school, or community.

2.

Each student and adult will wear a school-created name tag.

3.

Grade-level categories (This is based on the grade-level of the highest grade student participating in the group.):
  • Primary Elementary (K-3)

  • Intermediate Elementary (4-5)

  • Middle School (6-8)

  • High School (9-12)

4.

Groups will register in one of the following categories:
  • Community Service - Students provide a service within or outside the classroom into the community or entire school. No fees or profit are generated with service.
  • Entrepreneurial - Students provide an idea, service, solution or product that solves a problem or provides a valuable service to classroom, school or community. There can be a profit with this project.
  • Instructional - Students use the project to instruct one or more persons in a classroom or community or in a virtual setting. Learning takes place for one or more persons.
  • Technical - Students create a highly technical and specialized project.

5.

The group needs to be registered online by January 31, 2009  February 18, 2009.
  • Showcase Registration - This is an InfoPath form. Please fill out one form for each showcase table. The form is located on the Registration page of the STLP SharePoint.
  • It is important that all items on the registration form are complete so this information can be used to create the STEM Fair program, assign tables, and assign judges, as needed.
  • The STLP Coordinator from each school is responsible for registration.
  • If the showcase is registered as competitive, the STLP Coordinator from each school is responsible for providing a judge.

6.

We reserve the right to limit the number of showcase registrations per school if the number of tables needed exceeds the space available.

7.

A STEM Showcase Project Planner is required. One copy needs to be uploaded to SharePoint by February 27, 2009 and another copy is to be posted on your showcase display at the STEM Fair. If you choose to be a competitive showcase, the uploaded copy will be given to your judge before they arrive at your booth. The coordinator may complete this form but students need to understand the information. Points are deducted from the rubric if the project planner is submitted late.

8.

Students will have 10 minutes to communicate with judges. Judging begins at 9:00 but your showcase may not be first to be judged.

9.

Each booth needs to display signage with school name, project name, type of showcase, and project planner.

10.

Each booth needs to stay within the allotted space with equipment and sound. Tables are 30"x72". While this is an important rule for the STLP Fall and State Championships, some exceptions can be made at the STEM Fair. Please make note on the registration form if an extra table or more  space is needed and it may be possible.

11.

When setting up the booth, make sure the table number remains visible so visitors and judges can locate specific showcases.

12.

During judging, only the 1-4 students who are presenting the project should be at the table for the judges to interview.

13.

The following items may be requested when registering online:

  • 15" Flat-Screen Monitor

  • Access to electricity

  • Wireless access

14.

The following items, if needed, will need to be provided and hooked up by the student group:

  • Computer

  • Projector

  • Audio/Video Equipment

  • Speakers

  • Surge Protector

  • Extension cord

  • Other Equipment Needed

  • Garbage Bag

15.

16.

17.

Begin clean up at 11:00. There will be time for clean up and loading vehicles before the awards ceremony begins.
