Skill T4.4.3.1:  Keywords (broadening and narrowing)

Grade Level:  Tenth

Objective:  The student will conduct an Internet search for research information by effectively broadening and narrowing the keywords used in the search.

Academic Expectations:  1.16, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 5.4, 5.5, 6.2

Resources:  Yahooligans, Inspiration (concept mapping software)

Sample Activity: 

The students will be required to use the Internet to generate research information based on a class assignment. The students will use pencil and paper or computer software such as Inspiration to develop a list of keywords from which to begin their search. The students will then independently locate the needed information from the Internet using keywords and Boolean logic (and, or, not) to narrow and widen the search.
