Skill T5.3.1:    Determine what information/products are copyright protected when processing information from                                  the Internet

Grade Level:  First

Objective:  Students are introduced to definition of copyright (original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression).

Academic Expectations:  1.13, 1.4, 1.11, 1.16, 1.3, 1.14, 5.2

Resources:  Paintbrush, Music authoring program, Wiggleworks.

Sample Activity:

1.)  Students learn what is original and what is copied in mediums of art, music, and literature authorship. Teacher shares prints and original art and/or clip art and something saved using paintbrush and help then understand this. Share prerecorded music and then ask students to make up music (perhaps using a software program) and save it. Read fiction and ask students to tell or write original stories. Help them understand that all copyright mediums of expression were first original.

2.)  Ideas cannot be copyright but the expression of ideas can. Through class discussion, have them express ideas about a field trip, video, or experience in a variety of ways. Even if children have the same idea, they will not have "copied" if they express their idea differently than any another child in the class. Students will have a working knowledge of the definition of copyright (original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression).
