Skill T5.2.2:  Use Boolean Logic

Grade Level:  Fifth

Objective:  Students use Boolean searching in OPAC, electronic reference source(s), and the WWW to find current and relevant information.

Academic Expectations:  1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.11, 1.16, 1.10, 5.2, 5.3, 6.1, 6.3

Resources:

http://168.99.43.10/Search_Tut/new_hom2.htm (This is a tutorial or Boolean searching techniques with a 5 question multiple choice test.)

Http://lmsvillage.k12.ky.us/html/venn.htm (Venn Diagrams to illustrate how terms can be combined.)

Electronic Encyclopedias, Almanacs, Periodical Indexes, Atlases, Dictionaries

Sample Activity:

Use any electronic reference sources available that are on the reading level of the students to search for meaningful information. Searches are done "word" rather than "article"… (spiders and insects *Asia not Japan *cats or kittens) in the electronic sources . WWW Boolean searching is done as the search engine directs. Students scan results of searches for information relevant to the research questions. Continue to give opportunities to use the Online Library Catalog.
