Students will role play resolution of present day problems
which reflect the causes of historical conflicts between the Native Americans
and the early settlers of Kentucky.
Conflicts will reflect the following causes:
Communication, Religious, Cultural, Territory
Students will be placed in cooperative groups of four. Students randomly select a conflict which they will use to complete the above task. Students will also complete the culminating guide sheet.
Choose a conflict to resolve.
Describe a similar conflict between the Native Americans
and the early settlers and explain how it was resolved.
Write a paragraph describing how you would solve this
present day problem based on what you have learned from the historical conflict
and its outcome.
As a group write a script for a short skit which states the
problem and shows steps to resolution.
Perform the skit for the fourth and fifth grade
classes.

Comparing the Native Americans and Settlers of Kentucky
Divide the class into half. One group will be the Native Americans (Cherokee, Shawnee) and the other will be the settlers. Assign each student one characteristic of their group’s culture, territory, religion, communication to illustrate. (Communication – language

Territory – homes, hunting/food gathering, perception)
Student pictures will be used to generate a discussion of the comparison and contrasting of the two groups of people. Class will create a Venn diagram with their drawings. When discussion is complete student pictures will be assembled into a large mural to depict who the Native Americans and settlers of Kentucky were.
