Websites for New Teachers

The following websites have tips that may be helpful to any teacher.  They are especially useful for new teachers in Fayette County Public Schools, to help get your first year of teaching off to a great start!

Barbara Barr's "Back to School"

Beginning of the year activities and ideas from one of Fayette County's own!

Beginning Teacher Tips

Though this site is intended primarily (no pun intended) for elementary teachers, any teacher can get some helpful tips here.  Our favorite: "Planning for the first day of school!"

Central Office Directory

Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person.  Here's the directory for Central Office where you can locate people by name, department, or specific area.

Jason Swango's Web Site of Teachers' Resources

Jason is a science teacher at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, here in Lexington.  He has pulled together all sorts of excellent resources for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas.  Go Jason!

Kentucky Virtual Library

KYVL brings part of the library to your classroom!  Included are encyclopedias, research help, and a host of other reference resources that your students can access directly from a computer in your classroom.  These resources would normally cost your school thousands of dollars, but they are provided to Kentucky schools, free of charge.

New Teacher Resources

This TeachersFirst.com site has  links to a host of sites for new teachers.  Middle school teachers, be sure and check out the links specifically for you.

Professional Resources Matrix

Also from TeachersFirst.com, this site provides specific professional resources for topics such as ADHD, ESL, and professional associations.  P.S. Welcome to the world of acronyms!

Summary of Major Concepts Covered By Harry K. Wong

Harry Wong's book, The First Days of School, is a "must read" for new teachers.  This site provides you with notes about the major points in the book.  This would be a good site to go to after reading the book, to help you summarize and pull it all together.  While you're at it, take a few minutes to review Harry Wong's to-do list.

Teacher Vision

This online newsletter has advice and tips for all teachers, and includes a component specifically for new teachers.  There's a newsletter to which you may subscribe and receive via e-mail.

Teachers.Net

This international resource allows you to participate in chats with other teachers and educational professionals.  This is best used from home because it could get time consuming.  There are special columns by noted educators such as Harry and Rosemary Wong.

Technology Resource Teachers

Did you know your school has a technology resource teacher to work with you and other teachers on integrating technology into instruction?  Here's a link to all the TRTs.

Web/MAX

Fayette County has its own system for media access.  Be sure and see your Library Media Specialist about Web/MAX.

Works4Me Tips Library

Great tips from experienced teachers.
