Native Americans
and
Settlers in Kentucky

Introduction
The wilderness area we now call Kentucky was a hunting and battle ground for the Cherokee, Shawnee, Iroquoi and Chickesaw Indian tribes long before the settlers came across the mountains from the eastern sea coast.   The settlers brought dramatic changes to the region and their arrival marked the beginning of a new era in Kentucky's history.  As the settlers moved into this lush meadow land they came into contact with the various Indian tribes.  Soon conflicts arose over who had the right to use this fertile land.  As a result of these encounters many myths and stereotypes of Native Americans exist today.

Task
Your task is
to help set the record straight by contributing to a class mural which accurately depicts the lives of the Native Americans and the settlers.  You and your partner will conduct research to collect information from online resources, books and videotapes to find the facts about the lives of these people from long ago.  Complete your research worksheet.   Find the characteristic you have been assigned on your sheet.  Create an illustration which shows this aspect of the lives of Native Americans and the settlers.  As a class share your illustrations and create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the lives of these people from history.  Illustrations will be displayed together to create a mural of the Lives of Native Americans and Settlers in Kentucky.

Learning Advice
You and your partner should take turns using the computer and writing information on your worksheet.  Both of you should have had the opportunity to work on the computer.

You do not have to read everything at each website.  As you go to each website skim the text looking for keywords from your worksheet.  Once you have found the keyword stop and read that section of the website carefully.  Be sure to fill out everything on your worksheet.
