A CREATURE FROM THE DEEP It was the second to last day of vacation and my grandpa and I were fishing off the peer as usual. Then, all of a sudden, something caught my eye. At first I didn’t know what it was. Then it came to me. I started yelling to my grandpa, "Look it’s there! NO it’s there! NO WAIT, IT’S ON MY LINE!!!" And this is how it happened…I had woken up to a beautiful sunrise. I was looking out to the Apalachicola Bay to see if any fish where jumping in the glass like water. There was nothing. So I got up and silently tip-toed past my brother’s room because he was still sleeping. My mom and dad where up though, so I said to my dad, "Good morning." "Good morning," he said in return taking a sip of coffee. "The weather looks perfect for fishing." He continued. "It does. As a matter of fact I think I will do some fishing." I said in an exciting voice. Before my dad could say anything else, I was flying down the stairs, out the doors, and onto the pier. As I cast out my line, I thought to myself, "I hope it’s not too early to fish. I bet it’s not because they will probably want breakfast." These thoughts raced quickly through my mind. I had cast out my line a few times before I had any bites, the bites where probably just pinfish. I had soon given up hope for anything big. I did not know that in a few hours I would be reeling in a creature from the deep. It was 5:00 p.m., and I had caught nothing but pinfish. I was then fishing with my grandfather. I was just reeling in my line when I saw something swim out from underneath the pier. My heart stopped pumping. Immediately, I knew what it was, so I threw my line out into the horizon in the direction it was going in. A few minutes passed and I had caught nothing. But then, all of a sudden, my rod and reel literally almost broke! The strength of the beast tugging on my line almost tossed me into the water. My grandpa was coming with the net. "GET THE NET!" I yelled. "SHE’S COMING IN!" The next thing I knew, I was holding a net with a 5 pound, 2 and a half foot Black Tip Shark. Everybody in my family who was on vacation with us was on the peer screaming and yelling in joy. This was one of the biggest and best moments of my life. After this experience, I will always remember, every time I go to St. George Island, that anything can happen in the Apalachicola Bay.
The Day the Earth Stood Still Philip Winder I had thought that today was going to be a good day. I was WRONG. Maybe today would have been better if my taekwondo instructor had told me I was too far away before I tried to break my boards. Then maybe today would have been a little better. There I was at my taekwondo testing. This determined if I got my next belt or not. "Line up!" Mr. Chewning called. Then he talked to us a little. Then he sent us to wait to be called up to do our forms. We sat down and then he started to call up students. I was one of the first students called. I did my form to the best of my ability. Then we sat back down and we got our gear on. Mr. Chewning called me up to spar. It was three matches before we finished sparing then I went back and took my gear off to get ready to break boards. Then they started to line us up by age. They put me in the nine and ten age group. My stomach felt so weird I could have sworn I was going to barf. All the other kids were breaking their boards like it was nothing. Then it was my turn. I went up and set up my two boards. Mr. Chewning bowed me in. I kicked the first board. No good. I kicked the second board. Didn’t break. I was on my second attempt. I was a little stressed out. I kicked the first board again. Didn’t break. I the second board. CRACK!!!!!! "Yes!" I exclaimed. The board had broken. This was my last attempt. If I didn’t break it I wouldn’t pass the test. I was really stressed out. Then Mr. Chewning bowed me in. I kicked. It was like everything was going in s l o w m o t i o n. Then I made contact. WHAM! "OW!" I cried. I was afraid to open my eyes. But I opened them anyway. The board was not broken. I felt devastated. In fact, I felt so devastated that it was like the Earth stood still. I went back and sat back down. Miss Allen came over to me. She said I was awesome in sparring. After that I watched a demonstration by an instructor who taught at my taekwondo school. Then I went home without the knowledge of knowing I was going to get a new belt at the ceremony. But then I remembered that there was a retest. "I still have a chance. . ." I thought. I didn’t have much fun at my little brother’s birthday party that day. It probably would have been better if Mr. Chewning had told me I was too far away from the board before my last attempt. After that experience I will never stand too far away from the board again. But luckily I passed the retest so I still got my belt.
