Inside the Girls’ Bathroom

“Hey Sarah Ruth,” I whispered. “Are you asleep yet?”  We had been at church camp all week and it was our last night.  Already, everything possible had happened.  We went on an afternoon hike and thought we saw an alligator but it was really a log. The cabin was full of spiders and flies. (I hate flies). All of it had been scary at first but it turned out okay. I didn’t know it but this was the night it would be scariest of all…

We trudged over the hill that led to our cabin called Bethany.  Absolutely exhausted, I headed toward my bunk.  I climbed up the edge of the bed because there wasn’t a ladder. I looked out the square window that sat above my bed. “Ready to get a good night’s sleep?” my friend, Sarah Ruth asked. “ Yeah, but one thing, I feel like something freaky is going to happen tonight." I tiredly replied.  “Just have to wait and see!” she answered, “Good Night!”

Then 5 hours later I awakened to crickets chirping, I sat straight up in bed. “Sarah Ruth, are you asleep?” I whispered. “No, but I need to use the restroom!” she replied. We crept out of bed. Squeak! creaked the door. We peered out and turned pale. The campground looked as if it had been turned into a Ghostland. Moonlight tinged flowers and trees were witches waiting to take us away. We tiptoed barefoot stepping over twisted tree roots in our path.  Finally we reached the bathroom.

While Sarah Ruth crept toward the closest stall I slid down the rocky wall. That’s when I heard it. “AHHHHHHHHH! It’s a spider! Hellllllpp! (If you haven’t figured it out yet, Sarah Ruth isn’t a spider’s best friend.) “Is it a small spider?” I called out to her. “No, not really!” she shrieked.  I knew I had to get inside somehow. The lock on the stall wouldn’t budge no matter how hard I tried. I decided I would have to crawl under the door. BAM! My knees hit the ground like a cannonball. When I got inside I saw Sarah Ruth standing on the edge of a wooden stool in the corner, trembling. I took one step and under my foot felt a cold rock hard clump. I figured it was more likely to be a pebble than a bug but I didn’t have time to tell Sarah Ruth that. She grabbed my steady hand and we were gone.

Finding our way through the darkness I felt like Harriet Tubman looking for a safe house.  We reached the cabin door and slung it open. I climbed into the bed and all of a sudden had the need to laugh.  We both burst out laughing and didn’t stop until we feel asleep.

The next morning sitting at the table we ate doughnuts and cereal.  After breakfast I grabbed Sarah Ruth, “Come here. I have something to show you!” I took her to the girl’s bathroom and into the same stall we were in last night. I felt the floor and soon found the same cold rock hard clump under my hand. I picked up a little rock and showed it to Sarah Ruth. We both giggled as I slid the small pebble into my pocket and I’ve kept it until this very day.

Even though it’s only been 2 years that little rock is old and weathered. I keep it in my room in a small box. Every time I see it I retell the story in a different way each time. Sarah Ruth and I love this story and will never forget it.
