Purpose

Gives the reviewer’s opinion or reaction to the book; provides information to help others decide whether or not he or she will want to read the book.

 

Introduction/
Beginning

Hooks the reader with the first few sentences; summarizes the book VERY briefly, but does not give away the book’s ending or surprises; includes the title, author, and type of book; states the point the reviewer wants readers to understand or know about the book (see purpose of review)

 

Body

Includes at least 1 paragraphs; uses an element of fiction (character, theme, setting, and plot) to explain where the book is successful or fails and why; includes a main idea in the paragraph that helps prove the reviewer’s point with supportive evidence or examples from the story

 
Conclusion/Ending

Restates the point the reviewer wants readers to understand or know about the book;

 

Language

Uses words correctly; uses active verbs and specific nouns

 

Sentences

Varies sentence structure; uses complete sentences

 

Correctness

Uses correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar
