Introduction/Beginning

Hooks the reader with the first few sentences; summarizes the book VERY briefly, but does not give away the book’s ending or surprises; includes the title, author, and type of book; states the point the reviewer wants readers to understand or know about the book (see purpose of review)

 

Body

Is based on the elements of fiction (character, theme, setting, and plot) with thoughtful, detailed support provided which develops the main idea(s); includes a main idea in each paragraph that helps prove the reviewer’s point; supports each main idea with evidence or examples from the story

 

Conclusion/Ending

Restates the point the reviewer wants readers to understand or know about the book;

 

Language

Uses words correctly; uses active verbs and specific nouns

 

Sentences

Varies sentence structure; uses complete sentences

 

Correctness

Uses correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar
