Lesson One
Time

In the
Beginning...
- Introduce
the idea of writing realistic fiction.
- May want to
read an example.
- Discuss the
project idea of five students having an adventure at a Kentucky
landmark or location.
- Brainstorm
a list of possible sites within your region where the story could take
place.
- Assign the
students the task of choosing one location and write a paragraph as to
why this would be a good setting for a story.
- Have
students share their paragraphs with the class.
- Vote to
determine the setting for the story.

Lesson Two

Frame: 1 - 2 days

Where in
Kentucky are They?
Setting development
- Brainstorm
a list of sites of interest in your region of Kentucky
- Use books,
websites or other related materials to gain information about these
places
- Discuss
types of activities or adventures which might occur in these settings
- Vote on a
setting for the story
- Follow-up
with having students research facts about the setting you choose
to include in the story.

Three
Time Frame: 1 day

Who's Who?
Character development
- Divide the
class into five groups. Assign each group a
character.
- Have
students list personality characteristics of their character.
- Have
students list possible actions this character might do at the setting
which you've chosen.
- Using
student generated lists brainstorm a list of ways characters can
behave and change over a period of time.

Frame: 1-2 days

Now You've
Gone and Done it!
Problem
- Ask the
Library Media Specialist to assist the week or two before by reading
some realistic fiction or mysteries with the class. Encourage
your students to check out realistic fiction or mysteries from the
library.
- Discuss the
various problems and plots of books students have checked
out.
- Review the
setting and details about your chosen location. List and discuss
possible events and problems which could occur at this site.
- Choose a
problem for the story.

Time

Anything Could
Happen
Events
- Could teach
a lesson on dialogue during this section.
- In small or
large groups have students write about various events.
- Have
students share. The ideas will not necessarily all connect or
flow together. As a group discuss all ideas and begin to revise
using thoughts from each group to create the story line.

Solution
- Once the
story is to a point of needing a solution assign students to
individually write a way to solve the problem.
- Have
students share their individual solutions.
- As a group
decide on how to combine ideas for a class solution to the problem.

Wrap it Up!
Introduction
& Conclusion
- Discuss the
importance of an introduction and conclusion and the necessary parts.
- As a group
write sentence by sentence each paragraph. May allow individual
students to submit one sentence at a time building on the sentence
before.
